SDM Technology

Simulation Data is most meaningful if it is managed in the context of the processes used to create it. SDM is a structured information systems technology which provides for the management of data objects, metadata and inter-relationships at all levels of granularity and abstraction, including design and analysis parameters, requirements, and results. SDM solutions may be integrated with other systems and databases that manage engineering and product data. SDM systems are available for managing and executing a wide range of modeling and simulation data and processes, across the breadth of engineering disciplines, supporting a heterogeneous analysis environment. Integration of design, test, and manufacturing data with modeling, simulation and analysis is widely supported.

SDM solutions are also known as Simulation Process and Data Management, Simulation Process Management and Simulation Lifecycle Management. Vendors offering such solutions will present the state of the art at the conference, allowing delegates to see the progress that has been made since the first systemswere deployed.

NAFEMS SDM Working Group

Most manufacturing companies now have an urgent need to get their simulation data under control and improve their Simulation processes and productivity. NAFEMS has responded to these challenges for its members by creating the Simulation Data Management (SDM) Working Group.

The SDMWG conducted a survey to determine user needs and is developing a White Paper to provide engineering management and simulation methods leaders with an understanding and an ROI framework for communicating the critical enterprise-level business benefits to be derived by investing in SDM//SPDM/SLM/SPM technology over the next 1-3 years. Representatives from the SDMWG will report on these activities to the conference, to help members decide when and how to invest.

Vendor Panel Discussion

The North America SDM Symposium will also host the Vendor Panel Discussion where the leading vendors within the community will come together to articulate and discuss needs of the community in a non-competitive forum.

The Simulation Management Challenge

Faced with competitive and regulatory pressures, many manufacturers wish to take advantage of the falling cost of computer hardware and simulate much more to evaluate, optimize and validate their products in the virtual world and so minimize physical testing.

In order to increase their simulation capacity, companies need to increase the productivity of their analysts and disseminate simulation best practices to enable non-specialists to carry out simulations successfully. And companies need to find a way to manage the ever increasing avalanche of Terabytes of Simulation Data generated by more and more complex simulations.

Technology leaders share experiences

Visionary companies have embraced the new technology of Simulation Process and Data Management up to a decade ago. They have achieved breakthrough improvements in simulation throughput, analyst productivity, product performance and information traceability. Such companies will share their experiences, lessons learnt and benefits obtained at this landmark conference.

Why should I attend?

This landmark conference addresses the break through technology of SDM and will help participants better understand the benefits gained from implementing a Simulation Data Management system and how to save time, reduce development costs, and improve time-to-market.

Who Should Attend?

These events will be of interest to:

  • Program Directors
  • Top Designers
  • Expert Analysts
  • Engineering, CAE, and Design Managers
  • Engineering IT Leaders
  • CAE Solution Providers

CIMdata’s Simulation & Analysis Council Workshop

CIMdata’s Simulation & Analysis Council Workshop

Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Presented by CIMdata’s Simulation & Analysis Council and hosted by GE

In the first workshop on May 1, join CIMdata’s Simulation & Analysis Council and leading-edge users to learn how they created a competitive advantage by deploying simulation for conceptual design, product development, and manufacturing.

The workshop will focus on two critical areas:

Simulation Governance: The management, deployment, oversight, and accountability of engineering simulation performed as a core business and technical competence for strategic competitive advantage.

As companies continue to move towards total digital product development, making more and more decisions without physical testing, their ability to achieve reliable simulation of product performance becomes a crucial asset and competitive differentiator. As simulation tools become more widely deployed risk must be managed and contained.

The objective of Simulation Governance is to provide a governing framework of internal policies, standards, processes, resources, rules, metrics, and best practices which influence and determine a company’s capacity for simulation-based decision making. Simulation Governance supports the capability to leverage simulation as a key company strategy, and it ensures the reliable application of simulation by a wide range of users in product development and manufacturing.

Learn more about:

  • Why simulation competence should be a strategic capability for your company.
  • How simulation can be made more effective and reliable.
  • Ways in which simulation can be democratized for users who are not simulation experts.

Simulation-Driven Design: The effective use of simulation during the ideation and concept phases of product development.

Simulation has long been used as an analog of physical testing, to assess and validate the performance of completed designs. That aspect remains extremely important. However, following the incredible advances in computer hardware and software over the past five decades, simulation can now be applied earlier and earlier in the product development process, impacting not only the product itself, but also product concepts and architecture.

This phase of product development is the left side of the systems engineering “Vee”. Since detailed design of components for manufacturing has not yet begun, strategies must be in place to develop geometry for simulation. Key decisions are being made, decisions that will be impossible or extremely expensive to revisit later on. Applied effectively, simulation has a huge impact at this early stage, improving product quality, time-to-market, and ultimately a company’s financial performance.

Learn more about:

  • Which key technical breakthroughs will enable simulation-driven design.
  • Why multi-discipline analysis is so important.
  • What the role of systems engineering and requirements management is in up-front simulation.

Attendees at the CIMdata Simulation & Analysis Workshop will have plenty of time to discuss these critical areas and will learn answers to some of the following questions through a series of formal and informal discussions:

  • What are the strategies for successful implementation of simulation and CAE for product development and manufacturing?
  • Why should my company be implementing CAE data management or a simulation framework to manage simulation projects, processes, and resources?
  • How do I develop a strategic case for implementing a simulation framework?
  • What are the cultural and organizational barriers to implementation and how can I get beyond them?
  • What are the requirements to integrate simulation with other engineering and business applications and data in the PLM ecosystem?
  • What can I learn from the experiences of other companies dealing with similar problems to the ones I face?

CIMdata’s Simulation & Analysis Workshop provides an opportunity for attendees to network with CIMdata's Simulation & Analysis Council, which will meet at this event to review progress in targeting critical issues. At this meeting you will experience a lively forum in which to discuss the real issues. You will also have the opportunity to have your voice heard and your opinion on this topic counted. There will be plenty of time built in to the agenda for open (and private) discussions.
