Rob Rowsell, Engineering Director at Wirth Research, will talk about the 19 years of Computational Fluid Dynamics at Wirth Research. From starting with one computer in the corner of a bedroom, to a 76 TFlop supercomputer designing the aerodynamics of a Formula 1 car and Le Mans 24hr winning LMP2 cars in 2010, followed by a pivot to sustainability projects and a switch to zero carbon CFD in Iceland. Rob will talk about the Wirth approach to higher resolution simulations, the motorsport pedigree applied to sustainability, and a look toward the horizon.

Rob Roswell, Wirth Research

Rob joined Wirth Research in 2004 to start the Computational Fluid Dynamics department and has been pivotal in the development of CFD capabilities ever since. The first half of Rob’s career was at the cutting edge of CFD in motorsport, leading the application of CFD in the development of multiple championship winning Indy and Le Mans race cars. He has been at the heart of Wirth’s drive to explore applications beyond motorsport, particularly on commercial vehicles, refrigeration and architecture. He has a MEng in Aerospace Engineering from University of Manchester (UMIST) and is a Chartered Engineer with IMechE.
