Composites

Aims

The NAFEMS Composites Working Groups was formed in 2010, following strong demand from within the NAFEMS membership for a high level of activities related to the application of numerical methods to the analysis and assessment of composite materials.

Prior to this date, NAFEMS had already developed a number of publications and hosted several events which were of direct relevance.

The goal of the working group is to act as the focal point for all of NAFEMS activities relating to composite materials, and to spearhead the development of guidelines which will be of high value to industrial practitioners working in the field.

Initial Priorities

It is felt that there is a substantial requirement for further guidelines to be developed and published. The committee would like to focus on the following areas initially:

  1. Failure Prediction
  2. Input Parameters / Material Properties
  3. Benchmarks
  4. Manufacturing Processes
  5. Others

Wherever possible, reference will be made to existing texts and information.

Scope

Composite materials come in many shapes, sizes and formats. The group is still working on the details of exactly how broad its remit will be. It will not cover composite materials in the widest possible sense, and so materials such as concrete will not be included. It will cover most types of fibre reinforced plastics used in industrial engineering applications.

One of the first publications of the group is intended to be a detailed definition of its scope, which will include a host of useful definitions of various terms and concepts.
